Over the course of six days and six nights of fierce fighting, Mortain became the focal point of the war in Europe. Facing a ferocious assault by German armored divisions, American soldiers—particularly those of the famous 30th Infantry Division (“Old Hickory”)—held their ground against all odds, thereby sealing the outcome of the Battle of Normandy.

FACING THE OPPONENT: THE STORY RECOUNTED
The Battle of Mortain pitted seasoned GIs against German troops who were often very young and exhausted from weeks of retreat. This scene is an exact reenactment of a vintage archival photograph, capturing a young soldier from the 84th Infantry Division on a bicycle, armed with a Panzerfaust.
Thanks to custom-made mannequins and 100% authentic equipment, the museum allows you to experience history in three dimensions, just as it was photographed in August 1944.
